Released on September 19, 1988, New Jersey is the fourth studio album by Bon Jovi, marking one of the highest points in their career. Following the massive success of Slippery When Wet (1986), the band faced the challenge of maintaining their status as one of the world’s most popular rock acts. New Jersey not only lived up to expectations—it solidified Bon Jovi's dominance in the late '80s rock scene.
After an extensive world tour promoting Slippery When Wet, the band—led by Jon Bon Jovi (vocals) and Richie Sambora (guitar)—returned to the studio under both industry pressure and their own creative ambition.
Producer: Bruce Fairbairn, who also produced Slippery When Wet, returned to helm the project.
Recording location: Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, Canada.
Main songwriters: Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, with contributions from veteran songwriter Desmond Child.
The album was initially going to be titled Sons of Beaches, but the band ultimately chose New Jersey to pay tribute to their home state and to assert their identity amid the rising tide of glam metal bands from the West Coast.

The original vinyl release divided the album into two sides. Some special CD editions included bonus tracks.
New Jersey continued Bon Jovi’s signature mix of hard rock, pop rock, and glam metal, while showcasing greater lyrical and musical maturity:
Power ballads like I'll Be There for You and Living in Sin.
Arena anthems such as Lay Your Hands on Me and Bad Medicine.
Storytelling tracks like Blood on Blood, dealing with themes of friendship, loyalty, and the passage of time.
Country and blues influences in Ride Cowboy Ride and Love for Sale.
New Jersey was a massive commercial success:
#1 on the Billboard 200 (U.S.) for 4 weeks.
#1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and several European countries.
Over 7 million copies sold in the U.S. (7x Platinum, RIAA certified).
Over 15 million copies sold worldwide.
| Single | Highest Position on Billboard Hot 100 |
|---|---|
| Bad Medicine | #1 |
| Born to Be My Baby | #3 |
| I'll Be There for You | #1 |
| Lay Your Hands on Me | #7 |
| Living in Sin | #9 |
Bon Jovi became the first American rock band to have five Top 10 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100.
The album was promoted with the Jersey Syndicate Tour, one of Bon Jovi’s most ambitious tours:
Over 232 concerts in 23 countries.
Massive stage setups, pyrotechnics, and opening acts like Skid Row.
At times, Jon Bon Jovi temporarily lost his voice due to overuse, leading to internal stress and exhaustion.
The tour marked the end of an era for the band, who took a long break afterward.
In 2014, New Jersey was re-released in a deluxe anniversary edition:
Disc 1: Remastered original album.
Disc 2: The Sons of Beaches Demos (unreleased demos and alternate takes).
Optional DVD: Includes music videos and a documentary.
New Jersey not only reaffirmed Bon Jovi’s global status but is also considered one of the best rock albums of the 1980s. Its lasting impact is due to several factors:
A defining moment in the era of arena rock, just before the grunge wave changed the music landscape.
Lyrics that deeply connected with young audiences through themes of love, rebellion, faith, and friendship.
Featured in notable lists such as:
“1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die”
Rolling Stone's Best Albums of 1988 (international editions).
New Jersey is more than just a successful album—it’s a symbol of an era, of a band at the peak of its power, and of a generation that lived the glory days of melodic rock. Rather than resting on the success of Slippery When Wet, Bon Jovi delivered a bold, solid, and emotionally resonant record. In many ways, New Jersey remains the beating heart of Bon Jovi’s legacy.
